Engagement sessions are one of our favorite moments on our couples’ wedding journeys. They are a time to step back from the stresses of wedding planning and really enjoy time with the person you love. The silliness and love captured in these sessions are so important to us and our couples. Ericka and Alex’s engagement session perfectly embodied those moments of peace and happiness that truly celebrate the beginning of their forever.
Ericka told us that her and Alex’s relationship began “like all good modern couples” do, on Bumble! Ericka’s New Years resolution was “to say ‘yes’ more and dating was part of that commitment,” so when she matched with Alex nine days later, she was ready to say “yes!” Ericka said she “knew that night” that Alex was her forever, she even posted on Instagram, “I don’t normally like to make such proclamations but I’m going to marry this guy.”
Fast forward to a beautiful May afternoon and we are shooting their engagement session! We captured special moments on their couch with their adorable kitty curled up on the rug, occasionally nudging us for head scratches. There is an intimacy in having an in-home session that is so special and personal and we absolutely love it. Alex grabbed his guitar and they settled in—it was magic. Ericka said she wanted photos with the guitar because when she pictures Alex at home relaxing, she sees him tinkering on his guitar. Authenticity and incorporating details that are unique to you and your relationship are what make engagement photos like these cherished memories.
“He’s my best friend,” Ericka said, “he’s goofy and silly, but also so driven in his career. I admire his work ethic and his ability to be a self-directed learner.”
We took the session to Gold Medal Park in Minneapolis and we had so much fun! From walking up the hill and seeing the Mississippi River below, to walking along the Gutherie Theater and Mill City Ruins. With every shot, we saw how Ericka and Alex got more and more comfortable and slowly relax into one another. There is so much love between them and we can see it in every photo.
“We balance each other out in so many wonderful ways,” Ericka said, “he’s practical, I’m the dreamer. I’m more outgoing, he’s definitely introverted. So I draw him out and he grounds me.” To reflect this balance, we believe Minneapolis, and Gold Medal Park specifically, is a perfect place for an engagement session because the juxtaposition of urban and nature is so beautiful. Naturally, we then headed to the top of our favorite parking ramp that has a perfect view of the Minneapolis skyline. The sun was setting romantically between the skyscrapers as Alex and Ericka cuddled up close. Sealing the session with a dip-kiss straight out of Princess Diaries, we couldn’t wait to go home and edit.
After the session Ericka wanted to let us know that, “Alex was nervous about taking photos, not liking the limelight at all, but [we] made it so fun and enjoyable. [We] really put him at ease and now he’s actually excited for the wedding photos.” She was so happy that he was more comfortable. That is so sweet of her to say, we really do want everyone to have a fun time and cast away all of those nerves. This is a celebration and we treat it as such.
Our sincerest congratulations go out to Ericka and Alex and their families, we can’t wait for your beautiful Northshore wedding on June 1st, 2019. They are so excited for everything to come together, have fun with family and friends, and begin their happily ever after!
